Air vs. Surface Mold Testing: What's the Difference?
What air (spore) testing does
An air test pulls a measured volume of air through a collection cassette, capturing the spores floating in it. The lab counts and identifies those spores. Crucially, we take an outdoor sample too, because some mold in the air is normal — the question is whether indoor spore levels are elevated compared to outside. A significantly higher indoor count is the clearest signal of a hidden mold source you can't see.
Best for: musty smells with no visible mold, post–water-damage checks, confirming air quality, and post-remediation clearance.
What surface testing does
Surface testing takes a sample directly from a spot — a swab rubbed on the area, or a piece of clear tape pressed to it (a "tape lift"). The lab examines it under a microscope to confirm whether it's actually mold and, if so, which species. This tells you exactly what that stain or fuzzy patch is.
Best for: a visible spot or discoloration you want identified, confirming suspected growth, and documenting a specific material.

Why the best inspections use both
Mold problems are rarely just one thing. You might see a spot on a bathroom wall (surface test to confirm it) while a bigger source hides behind the drywall (air test to catch it). Using both — interpreted together by a trained inspector and an accredited lab — gives you the complete picture instead of a partial one.
